EVERLY

Watching Asher rush down the tunnel to throw himself between us and the dragons essentially killed me.

My eyes stung with tears, and I kept sobbing as I dragged my brother up the slope. He helped as much as he could, but I could tell by how he winced and groaned that the movement was almost too much for him to bear.

“Shoulda been me,” he growled.

“You’re half-dead.” I couldn’t agree. I didn’t want to lose either of them.

“Why are…you here?”

“I came to save you,” I sobbed. “They told me the dragons had you, that you were near death, that you needed me.” Don’t think about Asher. Don’t think about Asher!

But all I could think about was Asher. I kept looking over my shoulder, hoping to see him charging up the slope, singed but still alive.

I’d feel it if he died, wouldn’t I?

I regretted thinking so much about me, me, me, when I could’ve instead been doing all I could to make Asher see how much I cared about him.

This wasn’t going like it should. My mission had been a crapshoot from the second it got started.

“Who told you?” Alimar asked, seeming to find enough strength to bear more of his weight. It was all I could do not to drop him. If he fell, I wouldn’t be able to pick him up. Lyra couldn’t help in bird form, and I imagined she was still gathering enough power to shift back to her fae form.

“Chloe. My sister.”

“I know who she is.” Sorrow filled his voice.

I wanted to press him for more information. What did they mean to each other? My sister acted like they were more than friends.

“Where is she?” he asked softly.

“I don’t know where she is. Trion told us she left to find you, but she’s not here.” And he’d said she was “out of the way,” which I hoped didn’t mean she was dead.

Dead? My steps faltered. I couldn’t think about that right now.

“She won’t come near me.”

So, so bitter.

“I don’t think it’s you, if that helps.”

He said nothing, just panted as I hauled him up the slope. We reached the intersection and continued toward the cave entrance.

Asher. My heart hurt to think of him. He should’ve caught up by now. The dragons weren’t behind us, but where was he?

“Where’s your boyfriend?” Alimar asked. “He bailed on you like Chloe did with me?” He said it with so much sarcasm I wanted to drop him, stomp over him, and drag myself out of this cave, leaving him behind.

“He went back…” I gulped and tears sprang up anew in my eyes. “He went back to slow them.”

Alimar stopped. “Slow who?”

“The dragons.”

“Fuck.” He started to turn.

I latched onto his arm and held him back. “We’re getting out of this cave. I came here to heal you, and nothing is going to stop me. You going back down there will do nothing. Richard is close to taking over the world, and I need you.”

“I’m useless to you without the crown. We have to go back.
